Thank you for visiting Positive Birth Jersey! My name is May and I am a Registered Midwife (BA Hons) currently working in Jersey, Channel Islands. I had wanted to be a Midwife from the age of 7 (yep, really!) and my mum would often find me watching birth documentaries on the health channel (thankfully she was very supportive of my career goals!). I begun my Midwifery degree in 2011 and began my midwifery career working within busy NHS maternity units in both York and Cambridge. Throughout my career, I have worked in a variety of birth settings (labour wards, birth centres and within community midwifery teams attending homebirths) and more recently have experience in midwifery management and as a Professional Midwifery Advocate. In 2025, I made the decision to become a self-employed midwife which gives me a greater ability to support women with their individualised birth choices and empower them to navigate the modern-day maternity system. I am registered with both the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Jersey Care Commission (JCC) and I am fully insured to provide antenatal and postnatal care in Jersey.

I set up Positive Birth Jersey in 2017 after noting there was a real need in Jersey for fun, modern and realistic birth education that totally changed the way women (and their partners!) think about birth. I was working on Labour Ward and I often saw women feeling unprepared, uneducated and scared about birth. However, I was lucky enough to have witnessed so many amazing births, and I knew that that birth could be beautiful, empowering and POSITIVE! I first began teaching antenatal classes and Hypnobirthing on a private 1:1 basis, and then, in the spring of 2018, Jan and I teamed up together and put together our amazing group courses - which have been increasingly popular ever since!

I do however appreciate that sometimes things do not go to plan. Birth can, at times, be unpredictable. It is therefore very important for women and their birth partners to have the knowledge and tools to get the best from the situation that they may find themselves in during labour and birth, and it is important for you to understand the implications of the choices you may be required to make (and, believe it or not, there are lot of decisions and choices to make during labour and birth!)

You are likely to already have thought about your ideal birth and your preferences during birth. Hypnobirthing can help you remain calm, in control and relaxed during your birth experience, whatever the path that your labour may take. Giving birth to your baby can be a positive, empowering and amazing experience - and that’s where Hypnobirthing comes in. I have achieved a Diploma in KG Hypnobirthing, a widely respected body in the field of Hypnobirthing, and look forward to sharing this with you.

During your course, Positive Birth Jersey will ensure that you have access to high quality group sessions or private one-to-one Hypnobirthing classes at your home, bespoke to your individual needs. I look forward to discussing your hopes and expectations to learn how I can support you to have the birth that you would like.
